Super easy, fun to do Vest. Without any seams! Looks fabulous and can be worn several different ways.
Want to surprise a woman in your life with a gift that she will love and cherish?
Add some fun drama to her life with a great looking Drama Vest that gives her a bunch of options to play with.
While you are at it, make one for yourself. They are fun to make, fun to wear and look fabulous!
Doesn't this look wonderful! The best part - easy and fast to do.
You can use a multitude of different fabrics. As long as they have some drape to them.
Stiffer fabrics like densely woven ones look bulkier and lack the drape that you want - especially in the front view.
Rayon, soft linen/cotton blends, silk, tencel, ITY work well.
A link for this stunning hand batiked rayon fabric is at the end of this post.
For colder weather wear, you can use fleece fabrics. You can even just get some of those lightweight lap fleece blankets that are sold in discount stores. They are perfect for feeling snuggly warm and still looking snazzy.
If you want to really impress yourself and whoever you want to treat with something very special, hand paint the fabric! Yes! It is also easy and fun.
Fair warning: it brings so much joy when you see what you do in a short amount of time, you might want to keep going at it and end up with a whole bunch of Drama Vests for every occasion.

And what do you think of this pattern? It's kind of a no-pattern. Just a rectangle with armholes cut into it. That's it!!!
You can really see it in these examples on the right.
Easy does it!
And yet you get such a drama effect when you put it on.
Here's the template for the pattern.
If you don't have a large sheet of paper, glue some together - or get a roll of construction paper in the paint department of the hardware store. Those rolls are handy to have for all kinds of projects. But they are awesome for patterns. Nice and sturdy.
Steps to make it:
- cut out the rectangle. Cut the armholes into it.
- serge the edges with 3 threads / rolled hem with an overlock machine (serger).
- if you don't have a serger, you can go a bit more artsy funky and simply sew 2 or 3 rows of overlapping zig zag stitches around the rectangle and the armholes. Boutiques call that deconstructed. Ahh for trends!
Are you inspired - but you don't want to do ANY sewing?
If you want to keep it super simple: choose a fabric that doesn't ravel and there is no sewing at all. You can just cut and wear. Oh that might be a new phrase; "cut and wear" - hmmm - might inspire some more future projects. Stay tuned!
Any jersey, ITY, fleece fabrics are "cut and wear" type fabrics. You don't need to sew the edges. In the fashion industry they call that "raw edge finish". Now, why do they call that a "finish"? And not just what it is: a raw edge...
On to options on how to wear it.
If you know me, you know that I love options! Different ways of wearing something - different ways of turning a garment - different ways of tying a garments - fun ways to play with it and have multiple purposes. Check out the instruction photos.
What do you think? Is there going to be some more drama in your future - fun drama, as in Drama Vests????
